Amur River by FlyingViperArt Amur River by FlyingViperArt
Amur River - July 2010

First design for my Dragons series, based on the Chinese legend “The Jade Emperor and the Four Dragons”. This is the dragon of the Amur (black) river. The design was bases primarily around the anatomy of the Siberian tiger and red-crested crane which reside along and around the river.

-Medium: Biro and watercolour on drawing paper
-Size: A3

Apart of “The Four Dragons” series:

This is absolutely stunning! The colouring is just fantastic, and I really like how crisp and clear the lines of the dragon are particularly against the colour and texture of the paper....It really looks like the dragon is a three-dimensional sculpture! Also the shadows on the scales are done to absolute perfection :D Gorgeous job!

Wow I love your dragons!
Quick question btw, how do you get the paper in the background to look like that? Like aged?

Thanks :3 I scanned in some coffie-stained paper and layered it over the top, I think I used the "Hard Light" filter for it :P

the colors are a good choice, my illustration teacher always yells at us for NOT putting enough colors in our blacks.
"add some color see what happens" everyday

lol true :P I had my black paint confiscated at school! But it did me good :3 We were taught to look at all the colours and how the light falls on a figure or object and paint those ^^'

yeah my teacher just says put random colors everywhere i dont remember his reasoning but i know he's right.

everyone keep saying to take my black and white paint away but idk how i'd paint then. I like my blacks and whites.

I did a few paintings using just colour to shade and they turned out quite interestingly :) All I would suggest is to look at your hand, it's not neccicerily tea-coloured, coffee or brown, it has other coloured reflecting on it and darker colours of veins and bones that suggest underneith the skin :)

wow.. that really looks like a hell of alot of work. Great job. I especially like the face and the scales. I'd highlight the front leg a little more to make it more 3 dimensional.

Thankyou :)
I layered the colours in watercolour paints, starting off with the light colours and slowly adding more shading and detail with darker and darker ccolours, I probably used about 5 layers of paint? ^^'
